“Since York was for centuries the unofficial capital of the north of England it is not surprising that its insignia [civic regalia]...should be of exceptional importance” Charles Oman 1961.
The Mansion House is the home of the Lord Mayor of York, the first citizen of the city. The coat of arms of the city of York displays the civic regalia, including the city sword, mace and cap of maintenance. These items, which are kept on display in the Mansion House, are used on ceremonial civic occasions and represent the authority of the Lord Mayor of York. Most of the original items are used today, except the city sword bearer wears a cap of maintenance given by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012 and does not wear the Tudor cap.
